lds-get

lds-get is a simple utility for downloading the scriptures (Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, and Bible), church magazines, hymns, lesson manuals, and other resources from the LDS church's website. This program downloads HTML files from the church's website, makes slight modifications to them so that the links on them no longer point to the church's website but to the other pages you downloaded, and creates a new table of contents for them so that it is easy and fast to find what you want.

Why? The basic reason is that it allows you to do things with these files that you can't when they are on a server hundreds or thousands of miles away. For example this allows you to put all this content on a Palm (I use Plucker to help with this) or a PocketPC using a web browser. It also allows me to browse the content on my local computer a lot faster than I can using lds.org. It also makes it possibly to put the scriptures on a computer that does not have an internet connection. There are easier ways to get Church content on your Palm or PocketPC but I have never found one more flexible.

September 6, 2006 New full layout and filemap.txt. A few errors were corrected in the filemap.txt.

September 4, 2006 Version 2.0 is now released. Also a new full layout and filemap.txt. If your old version of lds-get is working fine for you I would continue to use it for now. Using this new version will possibly break things. This new version was released to handle the new format of the lds.org website. The Ensigns up to September have been added as well as some funny formating with the "True to the Faith" manual have been fixed.

May 3, 2006 New full layout and filemap.txt. The February, March, April, and May Ensigns have been added.

January 9, 2006 New full layout and filemap.txt. The December and January Ensigns have been added as well as the Wilford Woodruff Manual. (Thanks Helaman Ferguson).

November 5, 2005 New full layout and filemap.txt. Aaronic Priesthood Manuals have been added (thanks Graham Fountain). Scripture Stories have been added although the pictures don't download (thanks Robert Simons). And some links have been fixed (thanks Sherwin Harris).

2005-05-15 Version 1.8 released. I found a fairly serious bug in 1.7 where links weren't being created properly, if you are using version 1.7 you should update immediately.

2005-05-02 New full layout and filemap.txt. The May 2005 Ensign has been added. I have also taken the opportunity to add the "Lectures on Faith", version 1.7 of lds.get is needed to retrieve this content. NOTE: The Lectures on Faith are not approved by the LDS Church, it is being hosted on this site and I am still working on cleaning it up. Please read the notes that I have written with that content.
